Disciplinary fragmentation

Loader and Sparks (2010: 11) suggest that a fragmentation occurred within criminology as the discipline developed and specialised. This resulted in a proliferation of different approaches with some areas splitting off. Gloria Laycock (2012) agrees that crime science went for a divorce option to create a new sub-discipline. Tilley and Laycock (2014) argued for a change in the focus of enquiry into everyday routines, situations and the events that give rise to crime. Being outcome focused, crime science models itself on an iterative engineering model and is prepared to sacrifice some scientific rigour in order to be timely and relevant.

Yet Sherman (2005) proposed that criminology as applied to policing should model itself on medical science with the highest levels of scientific probity.

In practical terms differences present choices to police administrators (Scott, 2017; Ariel, 2018). Do they want to be informed by research of the highest possible degree of scientific certainty or ‘good enough’ research given realpolitik and feasibility considerations of the actualities of police work?
